Entering Kready's Store is like going back in time. The original E.E. Kready Store was located in Manheim from 1865 to 1957. In 1999, the entire store was relocated to Lititz. The
treasures that are displayed in the museum are the authentic atrifacts from the store's three
original owners as well as many items from the Kready household.
Elias E. Kready Jr. was the keeper and protector of the items in his father's store
for nearly 40 years. In 1993, Mr Kready decided to begin the process of
selling each item of the store's enormous stock, per piece, to Paul Brown.
His decision to do so rested upon the agreed provision that ensures that the integrity
of the collection remain intact, to keep the Kready family spirit alive, and to promote
the historical significance of Lancaster County.
After great efforts and meticulous restoration, the Kready Country Store Museum
re-opened its doors in historic Lititz in 1999. The
store's goods and fixtures date from 1840 throouhg the 1940's. The products on the shelves are
still full of their original contents! The two-story museum is complete with the original shelves, counters, light fixtures, 1910 Armstrong linoleum floor and even the original store front!
The store is a Heritage Tourism Site and was awarded
the highest level of designation for its signifigance to Lancaster County's Heritage.
