The Demuth home, built in the latter part of the 18th century, is one of the oldest in Lancaster and once served as a Colonial era tavern.
The Demuth Foundation has a permanent display on the life and work of Charles Demuth and the Demuth family available to visitors.
Tobacco Shop
Our store is the oldest tobacco shop in the nation and the 2nd oldest business in Lancaster—we've been in business for 235 years. In fact, Demuth's Tobacco Shop is still in the original building where the company started.
Opened in 1770 by Christopher Demuth, the tobacco shop was passed down through family hands for over 200 years. In the 1920's noted Lancaster architect Emlen Urban designed the interior and exterior as the shop appears today.
Now, the historic properties and business archives are maintained by the Demuth Foundation. The Demuth Tobacco Company continues to operate Demuth Tobacco Shop as a retail business selling quality tobacco products and supplies.
